Ferns add texture, form and, yes, even
color to a shade garden. Ther are several interesting ferns with
unique crested fronds and some with delightful coloration
patterns.

Royal Fern, Osmunda regalis, is a native fern that has a pleasing demeanor in the perennial garden. It is one of the "flowering ferns" having the fertile fronds that appear like flower spikes looming above the green fronds.
