Hosta. The King of Shade Perennials!

Hosta come in many sizes, shapes and colors variations; sizes are usually descriped as:

Mini -  < 7 inches; Small 7 to 15 inches; Medium 15 to 22 inches; Large > 22 inches and I usually classify those getting over 36" as Jumbo!

Hosta have multple uses ~ specimen plantings; mass planting for ground covers; small group plantings for a dramatic effect; borders; foundations; mixed with other species such as ferns, woodland wildflowers and many other perennials to create a garden showplace.

These are plants propagated by  Shady Oaks Nursery.

Wholesale quantities can be purchased  by garden centeers or nurseries for resale through North Wind Perennials or directly from Shady Oaks (www.shadyoaks.com)

Shady Oaks Nursery, established in 1982, began as a mail order retail operation with an emphasis on "Plants for Shady Places". Since then it has expanded into a major wholesale supplier of premium Hosta cultivars, many of which have been produced under the direction of Hans Hanson, who directs the research and development of the nursery. You will note that his name is listed as originator or many of the elite varieties throughout this list. In addition a major portion of the Hosta photos are his, taken in his own garden.

Wholesale Hosta are produced in cell packs of 12 per pack with 8 packs per 1020 tray making 96 plants. Minimum order is 1 full tray, but may be a collection of up to 8 different types.
Our retail plants are offered in two sizes. We have field  grown divisions as well as smaller "starter size'
Wholesale size plants are shown in the photo

A typical "Starter Size" plant

Note the well developed root system. These plants have been through one or more winter dormancy periods and grown on in small pots to prepare them to be quickly established in your garden. They are especially popular with gardeners that wish to establish mass plantings of newer types which will be more costly for multiple numbers of larger plants.

Discounts for multiple Starter size plants

Order starter size in multiples of 3 for discounts from single plant price:

Three of one variety 10% discount; Six 15% ; Nine 20% and Twelve or more 25%

A typical Bare Root Division
Nearly all Hosta are shipped bare root. There are two major reasons: (1) It is  less costly to ship and (2) the plants should be knocked out of the pot to more quickly get the plant established in the soil of your garden rather than being confined to the soil of the container in which it was grown. Note the yellow arrow which may be a cutting line to divide this into two two divisions.
