The term 'wildflower" is perhaps better interpreted as "native plant" or even a species. For the most part those listed are native to somewhere in Northeastern U.S., but each has it's own range and ecological habitat. As gardeners, we tend to expand the range or even bring the natives back to where they were before massive development destroyed the native habitat.
In working with gardeners and promoting the use of native species, I often come across those who buy a packet of "wildflower " seed and expect to have "native" species. More often than not the species in the packet is a mixture of seeds from various praire regions and not species native to the gardeners in a woodland area.
This list of plants are mostly woodland species that tolerate various amounts of shade.
